Assembly of flanged connections

Assembly is extremely important for the function of a sealed connection. It is not just about applying the specified prestress during assembly. Assembly should rather be seen as a component of quality assurance. Depending on the requirements for the tightness of the connection, the assembly procedure used can range from a striking-face wrench to hydraulic clamping with bolt elongation measurement.

Hydraulic clamping process

For components which are important for safety, we use the hydraulic clamping procedure, as friction effects are of a lesser significance and almost no torsional loading occurs in the bolts. Furthermore, all bolts in a connection can be tightened simultaneously, making a complicated tightening sequence unnecessary. Also, the elements in the clamped connection – especially the sealing elements – are loaded beyond their future prestress. This accelerates settling, which subsides by the end of the clamping operation.

Bolt stress measurement

So that the resulting levels of bolt stress can be controlled and the stress distribution range restricted, an additional, explicit measurement of the bolt stress is required. For this reason, in addition to the hydraulic clamping fixtures, we have developed a variety of systems permitting comprehensive control of the clamping procedure.

TEMES okto.ms

In the TEMES okto.ms system, the TEMES fl.ctrl clamping fixtures are equipped with specially developed displacement measurement elements – the "OKTO" sensors – which are set directly on the clamping fixture's tension nuts. They measure the bolt elongation with an internal pin throughout the entire clamping process.

All stages of the clamping process can be seen on the screen of a connected laptop. This enables individual bolts to be adjusted precisely. The resulting prestress can be brought to the specified value with almost any accuracy desired. At the end of the clamping process, the quality of the assembly can be documented with a report. more…

TEMES okto.mu

On the TEMES okto.mu system, digital indicators are used instead of the OKTO sensors. However, the principle is identical to that of the TEMES okto.ms system. The digital indicators are set directly on the clamping fixture's tension nuts and measure the bolt elongation with an internal pin throughout the entire clamping process. more

This is a further development of the TEMES okto.mu system. The digital indicators are equipped with a radio transmitter, enabling wireless data transmission. The signals are recorded by a special receiver and forwarded to the data logging unit. more…

Ultrasound can be used to record the prestresses in the bolts during assembly. An ultrasonic pulse is emitted which runs longitudinally along the bolt and is reflected at the opposite end as an echo which subsequently returns to the test head. The time for the ultrasonic pulse to travel between each end of the bolt is used to measure the bolt. This enables changes in this time to be recognized while the bolt is being tightened. more…
